ARLS025 New Astronaut Hams
QST de W1AW
Space Bulletin 025 ARLS025
From ARRL Headquarters
Newington, CT July 6, 1994
To all radio amateurs
New Astronaut Hams
Shuttle Missions To Carry New Astronaut-Hams.
Launch Scheduled for July 8.
The Amateur Radio community has three new astronaut-hams among their
ranks. The FCC has recently issued call signs for Robert D. Cabana,
KC5HBV, L. Blaine Hammond Jr, KC5HBS and Jerry M. Linenger, KC5HBR.
Cabana will serve as Commander on the Space Shuttle Columbia which
is scheduled to launch this Friday, July 8, at 1643 UTC. The
mission has been designated STS-65. Hammond and Linenger will fly
aboard the Shuttle Discovery during STS-64 in September.
When Columbia launches this week, it will carry the second
International Microgravity Laboratory (IML-02) and the Shuttle
Amateur Radio EXperiment (SAREX) payload. Cabana and Mission
Specialist Donald Thomas, KC5FVF will lead the Amateur Radio
activities, which will include random QSO opportunities with the
general ham radio community and specially selected schools around
the world.
SAREX will be flown in configuration C, which includes 2-meter FM
voice and packet radio hardware. The crew will use separate receive
and transmit frequencies. Earth stations should listen to the
downlink frequency and transmit on the uplink frequency only when
the Shuttle is in range and the astronauts are on the air. The
worldwide voice and packet downlink frequency is 145.55 MHz. Please
do not transmit on this frequency. The voice uplink frequencies are
144.91, 144.93, 144.95, 144.97 and 144.99 MHz. In Europe, the voice
uplink frequencies are 144.70, 144.75, and 144.80 MHz. The
worldwide packet uplink frequency is 144.49 MHz. Look for KC5FVF
and KC5HBV on voice, and W5RRR-1 on packet which the crew may
operate in an attended or unattended mode.
